This is a question I get asked often, especially by expectant mothers who are preparing their baby registry. "Why are all your sleepsuits footless? Isn't it more practical with feet?"
I understand the hesitation. Sleepsuits with integrated feet are everywhere. It seems logical, all-in-one, nothing to search for. But here's what I learned with my two sons, and why I made the deliberate choice to only sew footless sleepsuits at Maison Piou Piou.
At the maternity ward: footless simplifies everything
From the very first hours, the footless sleepsuit proves its usefulness. Caregivers need easy access to the baby's feet for blood tests, assessments, and circulation checks. A footless sleepsuit simplifies every movement. No need to fully undress, no unnecessary manipulation of a fragile newborn.
It's also for this reason that I always recommend the front-opening sleepsuit combined with footless for the hospital bag. The two together form the most practical combination for the first few days.
Babywearing: another good reason
If you wear your baby in a sling or baby carrier, the footless sleepsuit is much more suitable. When the baby is in a frog-leg position in the carrier, their legs are bent, their knees raised. A sleepsuit with feet pulls on the legs, compresses the hips, and creates uncomfortable tension on the baby's natural position.
The footless one, on the other hand, leaves the legs free to position themselves naturally. No pulling, no discomfort. Baby is comfortable in their ergonomic position, and you don't have to struggle with a sleepsuit that pulls in all directions when you put baby against you.
I carried both my sons in a sling for months. The footless sleepsuit was an obvious choice from day one.
Growth: footless lasts longer
The first few months are marked by incredibly rapid growth. A footless sleepsuit adapts for much longer than a model with feet. Even if the baby has grown and the legs are a little short, the garment remains wearable, comfortable, without squeezing the toes. With integrated feet, the sleepsuit becomes too small much faster.
This is both an economic and practical argument. A single footless sleepsuit accompanies baby twice as long.
What about the feet, then?
They don't stay bare, though. A small pair of fabric booties, easily removable depending on the warmth, perfectly completes the outfit. No socks disappearing in the washing machine, no overheating if the room is warm. You put on the booties when it's cool, you take them off when baby is warm. Simple, adaptable, practical.
At Maison Piou Piou, I sew Oeko-Tex certified fabric booties, designed to go with my sleepsuits. Together, they form the ideal outfit for the first few months, both at the maternity ward and at home.
In summary
The footless sleepsuit is the choice for versatility. Practical at the maternity ward, suitable for babywearing, comfortable for sensitive skin, and usable for longer thanks to its flexible cut. It is for all these reasons that I sew no other type.
