Should you choose a velour or jersey baby sleepsuit?
It's often thought that velvet is essential in winter. However, in Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian countries – where winters are much harsher than in France – jersey remains the go-to fabric for baby pajamas. It's popular there because it combines warmth, breathability, and comfort.
Jersey keeps baby at a good temperature without the risk of overheating, which is essential for their well-being and safety. With a suitable sleep sack (TOG 2.5 for a room at 18–20°C), it provides perfect protection even in the middle of winter. Its flexibility also makes it much more practical than velvet: quick dressing, freedom of movement, and maximum comfort from the very first days.
It's for all these reasons that I've chosen to work exclusively with jersey: a soft, modern, and proven material, capable of accompanying baby all year round with the same tenderness.
What is the difference between NB and 0–3 months for baby pajamas?
The NB (newborn) size is suitable for the very first days, up to approximately 53 cm and 4 kg. It's ideal if you want the sleepsuit to be worn right from the maternity ward.
The 0–3 month size goes up to 61 cm and approximately 5.5 to 6 kg, allowing for longer use, even if it might seem a bit big at first. For an average-sized baby, the NB size is for the first few weeks, then the 0–3 month size takes over.
Why choose front-opening pajamas for maternity?
I chose to sew pajamas with a front opening because it's the most practical model for the first few days. Thanks to its snaps on the front, it opens wide and allows you to dress the baby without having to put the garment over their head. This avoids handling them too much, which is reassuring when you're just starting out. And if care or monitoring is necessary at the maternity ward, this type of pajama truly simplifies things.
This type of pajama is also ideal for skin-to-skin contact. Simply open the front to place the baby against you, while keeping their arms and legs warm. No need to undress them completely: you can enjoy this essential contact with comfort and simplicity.
What are the best fabrics for a newborn baby's sleepsuit?
For a newborn pajama, it is essential to choose soft, breathable, and certified materials to respect the delicate skin of newborns.
- Cotton jersey is particularly recommended: flexible and stretchy, it makes dressing easier and accompanies the baby's movements.
- Pointelle knit adds a refined, light, and comfortable touch.
- French terry or cotton terry offer a softer texture, ideal for cooler seasons.
In all cases, opt for Oeko-Tex or GOTS certified fabrics, which guarantee the absence of harmful substances. This is what distinguishes a simple garment from a safe and comfortable pajama to wear from birth.
