FAQ – Baby Pajamas
What is the difference between NB and 0–3 months size?
Newborn size (NB) is for the very first days, up to about 53 cm and 4.5 kg. It's ideal for the hospital. 0-3 month size goes up to 61 cm and about 5.5 to 6 kg: it lasts longer, even if it might seem a bit big at first. For a newborn gift, I often recommend 0-3 months — baby will wear it longer.
What material should I choose for baby pajamas?
For my baby pajamas, I chose to work with a deliberately limited number of fabrics, all selected for their softness, comfort, and their ability to be gentle on the delicate skin of little ones.
Jersey is the most versatile fabric. Soft, flexible, and naturally thermoregulating, it is suitable all year round, including in winter with an appropriate sleep sack. It helps keep baby from getting too hot and feels very pleasant against the skin. It's my preferred fabric for newborn baby pajamas.
French terry is ideal for cooler nights or mid-season. A little thicker than jersey, it provides extra warmth while remaining breathable and comfortable.
Stretch terry, composed of 80% cotton and 20% polyester, is perfect for winter. Plush, stretchy, and enveloping, it keeps baby warm without being stuffy. Oeko-Tex certified, it is free from harmful substances for babies' sensitive skin.
Pointelle, finer and delicately openwork, is designed for babies who tend to get warm or for milder seasons. It remains comfortable, breathable, and very pleasant to wear.
Ribbed jersey offers a soft and stretchy feel with a bit more structure. It's a comfortable everyday fabric, with a cocooning effect, without being too warm.
All these materials are Oeko-Tex certified, regardless of their composition, which is non-negotiable at Maison Piou Piou from birth.
And if baby is swaddled, what material should you choose?
If the baby is swaddled, it is essential to choose light and breathable materials to avoid any risk of overheating. In this case, I recommend jersey or pointelle. These materials are flexible, soft, and naturally breathable. Thicker materials, such as loopback terry or stretch terry, should be reserved for times when the baby is not swaddled or when the room temperature is cooler.
Should I choose footless pajamas?
Yes, and it's also the only model I offer at Maison Piou Piou. Footless pajamas allow baby to move freely, stretch their legs without being restricted, and adapt to all body types, even when baby grows quickly. They are also perfect for babywearing: the legs remain free to naturally position themselves in a frog position, without traction. Simply add fabric booties depending on the temperature. Footless baby pajamas also last longer, making them a practical, soft, and economical choice.
Is a front-opening pajama more practical for maternity?
Yes, this is the model I absolutely recommend for the maternity bag. Thanks to its snaps on the front, the sleepsuit opens wide and slips on without going over the head. It simplifies dressing at each change, especially if the baby has monitoring cables. You lay the baby flat, open it, change, close it, and the cables pass freely to the side without unnecessary handling. This is why all my baby sleepsuits are designed with a front opening.
